A Month of Days

Busy, busy, busy month. Lots going on. No time to waffle (well, some waffle, it’s me after all). Let’s get right to it!

3rd of March – World Book Day

First up: it is the Day of the Books of the World! Younger readers with a ÂŁ1 token burning a hole in their pocket can trade it in for any of these books on this list down here – you’ll find them in the Snug under Book-ish, right at the bottom of the stairs.

8th of March – International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day has, since 1911, flown the flag for the cultural, social, economic and political achievements of the world’s women. It’s also been an occasion for protest and political challenge, in the ongoing fight for gender equality, the establishment and preservation of women’s rights, and an end to systemic violence against women.

What About Men?

For 2022, the UN has set a theme of “gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, looking to highlight the contribution of women and girls around the globe, who participate in their communities promoting on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response.

We’re also curating a special International Women’s Day list from our Publisher of the Month (of whom more later).

21st of March – World Poetry Day

Why oh why did I ever consent to
Be wrangled about by this meter and rhyme
This malarkey of tumbling language on call
This delectable waste of my time

Because doing it once was never enough
Never was nor will never again
It turns out this poetry lark’s a delight
A verbal massage for the brain

I know, I know, it’s doggerel. But I’ll (hopefully) be reading some other, better poems from the catalogue on our YouTube channel during this month. Stay tuned!

26th of March – Mother’s Day

“Grown don’t mean nothing to a mother. A child is a child. They get bigger, older, but grown? What’s that suppose to mean? In my heart it don’t mean a thing.”

— Toni Morrison, Beloved

Publisher of the Month: Melville House

Since its inception twenty years ago this February, Melville House has been called “brilliant,” “anti-establishment,” “small but innovative,” and “[an] enticing American boutique.” Twenty years later, with offices in Brooklyn and London and a staff of 15, Melville House have published over 700 books, including an astonishing list of internationally acclaimed authors. We’re delighted to join them in celebrating their twentieth anniversary. As books arrive for the celebration, they’ll appear on the list below, so do keep checking back!

Phew.

And that’s just, you know, the special days. We also have a fantastic month for events, including our freshly revamped board games night (now on the second Friday of the month, so that’s the 11th of March) and the increasingly popular quiz night (fourth Friday of the month, so that’s the 25th of March). Keep an eye on the events page of this very website, follow us on social media, and of course, there’s always that newsletter.
