An evening with… Iain MacGregor

18 June 2025 @ 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

£10.00 – £30.00

Join us for an evening with author and historian Iain MacGregor, who will be giving a talk about his new book (published in June 2025) which deals with the most significant event of World War Two - Hiroshima. This is sure to be a fascinating and informative evening and all tickets include a glass of wine or a soft drink and there will be the opportunity to get your book signed too.

About The Hiroshima Men
This book tells the decade-long (1936-46) story of the race for the atomic bomb, through the eyes of four main participants (American and Japanese), the war across Europe and the Pacific, and ends when Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and war journalist John Hersey broke the story of what ‘Little Boy’ actually did to Hiroshima in his iconic article for The New Yorker magazine. Within the book, MacGregor also tells the story of Senkichi Awaya - who was the mayor of Hiroshima, and whose impact has largely remained hidden until now. His life serves a metaphor for the rise and fall of Japan. MacGregor unearthed his papers in Tokyo National Library – stored there since 1965 by a family member. He travelled to Japan last winter to meet and interview several survivors, as well as the former director of the Hiroshima Memorial Museum (Kenji Shiga) and also to research various archives and interview American-based Japanese as well as American servicemen who served in the Pacific theatre.
